First of all, we do often get requests for the best pubs to visit in Bristol so as a branch we have agreed an ‘Ale Trail’ that we post on our website.

This year’s Good Beer Guide is also quite a good starting point but here is some more info.

Starting close to Bristol Temple Meads:

Must: Cornubia (nice garden and dark ale)

Must: Kings Head (Historic Interior and usually and dark ale)

Nearby: Seven Stars (Dark Ale) (Not the nicest place/location but good beer)

Nearby: Left Handed Giant (Keg centric, one, usually two cask, but lively and a landmark and worth a visit. Pizzas a speciality).

On King Street:

Llandoger Trow, Famous Royal Navy Volunteer and Small Bar are best for beer. Beer Emporium and King St Brewhouse may be worth a visit. (All are lively and good atmosphere in a historic area). King Street is a stag/hen destination so could be very busy.

Just off city centre: The Shakespeare Tavern. Former POTY. Historic building. Good pub food.

Commercial Rooms (Wetherspoons – always busy).

Bank Tavern Usually quiet.

Christmas Steps (historic building).

Gryphon (For dark beer and/or heavy metal music).

Lime Kiln (A little bit further out at back of City Hall). Usually quiet but amongst the best beer, including at least one dark ale.

Barley Mow (The other side of Temple Meads a former POTY that ticks all boxes)
