Campaign for Real Ale

Pubs Group

Bristol Pubs Group campaigns against closure of viable pubs. We support the place of the pub in the community and value the pub as part of our architectural and social heritage.

The British pub is envied around the world - from rural local to city music pub and suburban roadhouse, the pub has been a part of our lives for centuries. We want it to stay that way.

Pubs are closing at an unprecedented rate: action is needed to stop the destruction of a much-loved part of our way of life.

Our Aims: Promote the use of community pubs Campaign against closing potentially viable pubs Campaign against insensitive alterations How We Campaign We help community groups to save their local pub with guidance on campaigning and legal instruments. Pubs Group members write articles for our award-winning CAMRA regional newsletter, Pints West - including news of pub closures, threatened conversions, and of pubs saved! We encourage people to support their local through promotional material and articles in Pints West. We maintain and develop relationships with local authorities, councillors and MPs. We alert the media and encourage high profile coverage of the issues. We liaise with groups such as Historic England on issues including the listing of buildings. We have records (from our observations and research) of closed pubs that have potential and make these records available to anyone looking to run a local pub. Part of Bristol & District CAMRA, the group has a great deal of experience and knowledge in campaigning and is made up entirely of volunteers from the area1. We have one thing in common: a love of the British Pub.
